How to Drink Water Properly: Sunnah & Science Behind It


Water is life. But did you know that the way you drink water has a huge impact on your health? Drinking water the right way can improve digestion, energy, and even prevent diseases. Let’s explore the correct way to drink water — supported by modern science and the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ).


1. Sit and Drink — Don’t Stand


🟢 According to Sunnah, the Prophet (ﷺ) advised us to sit while drinking water.

🔬 Science says: Sitting allows better absorption and prevents bloating and kidney damage.


“Do not drink standing; if you forget, then vomit it out.”

→ (Sahih Muslim)



2. Drink Water Slowly — In 3 Breaths


🟢 Drink in sips, not in one gulp.

🔬 Gulping water may shock your system, especially after exercise.


 The Prophet (ﷺ) used to drink water in three breaths.

→(Tirmidhi)


3. Say Bismillah Before Drinking and Alhamdulillah After


This not only brings blessings (Barakah) but creates mindfulness.



4. Use Right Hand


 The Prophet (ﷺ) always used his right hand to eat and drink.




This is a hygienic practice as well — our left hand is used for cleaning.


5. Drink Lukewarm or Room Temperature Water


Cold water can disturb digestion and slow down metabolism. Try drinking lukewarm water, especially in the morning.



6. Avoid Drinking Too Much at Once


Over-drinking can dilute digestive enzymes. Just drink enough to quench thirst.



7. Don’t Drink Immediately After Eating


Wait 30 minutes after meals to help digestion. Drinking right after meals can weaken stomach acid.


8. Drink First Thing in the Morning


Start your day with 1–2 glasses of water on an empty stomach to flush out toxins and boost your metabolism.
